VW Golf Mk5 Edition 30 Headlining Retrim

This customer project features a VW Golf Mk5 Edition 30.

The Mk5 Golf is well known for headlining sag over time.

The original headlining was retrimmed using black stretch suede. This gives the interior a cleaner, more modern finish.

Project Details

  • Vehicle: VW Golf Mk5 Edition 30
  • Area retrimmed: Headlining
  • Material used: Black stretch suede
  • Quantity used: Approximately 2.5 metres
  • Adhesive: Trim-Fix (approx. 2 cans)

Stretch suede helps manage curves around the roof panel and edges. Giving a nice even finish.

Notes on Adhesive Application

This headlining was completed successfully on a second fitting attempt.

After the initial application used too much adhesive. This caused some seepage through the material.

Fred shared the following feedback from his experience:

“Second time lucky. Hard to get the perfect amount of glue on without it bleeding through.”

This is a common learning point when working with suede for the first time.

Highlights the importance of:

  • Applying adhesive in light, even coats
  • Keeping the spray can 20-30 cm away from the material
  • Allowing the adhesive to become tacky before bonding
  • Working in manageable sections rather than spraying the entire panel at once

As you can see the second attempt resulted in a clean, smooth finish.

About the Installation

For this Mk5 Golf:

  • Careful preparation of the headliner helped ensure good adhesion
  • Working in sections made fitting more manageable
  • Stretch suede allowed for a consistent finish around contours and recesses
