1981 Ford Cortina Interior Retrim in Black

Personal Note

This project is a special one for me. It features a 1981 Ford Cortina. The same car my Father used to drive when I was a child. I remember it vividly and it was a great motor that brings back wonderful memories.

The interior was retrimmed using black stretch suede. Gave the cabin a cleaner, more updated finish while keeping the classic character of the car.

This build did not focus on the headlining.

What Was Done

  • Vehicle: 1981 Ford Cortina
  • Areas retrimmed:
    • Dashboard
    • Centre console
    • Steering wheel
  • Material used: Black Stretch Suede

How Much Material Was Used

  • Total used: 3 metres

Three metres was enough to complete the dashboard, centre console and steering wheel.

On smaller classic interiors like the Cortina a relatively small piece can go a long way.

About the Steering Wheel

The steering wheel required extra care.

Kieron decided to triple layer the suede to get the feel and finish he wanted. He first removed the original tight stitching.

This shows how stretch suede can be shaped and stitched. Allowing for more detailed interior work.

Customer Feedback

After completing the retrim, Kieron shared:

“Brilliant stuff. Used it for everything but headlining haha. Had to triple layer on the steering wheel. I didn’t like the original tight stitching but looks well now. Did the new stitching on the suede myself.”
