Step 3: Prep surface

This is the third step in re-covering a car headlining with suede. It is a short stage, but skipping it undoes the work you put into removing the foam. Before any adhesive goes on, the board needs to be clean, smooth and ready.

Check the board over

Once the foam is off, run your hand across the whole board. It should feel clean and smooth, with no loose bits, flaky patches or rough spots.

If you find any foam you missed, take it off now. It is much easier to deal with at this stage than after the suede is on.

Why a smooth surface matters

Suede is thin. Any lumps or leftover foam underneath will show through the finished surface once the fabric is on, and they are exactly the spots where the suede tends to peel first.

A flat, clean board gives the spray adhesive a solid surface to grip and helps the finished lining sit smoothly.

Do not forget the corners

Pay particular attention to the corners and any recesses, as these are the easiest places to miss. A final pass with a small brush usually catches anything left behind.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating this as a formality and not checking the whole board.
  • Leaving dust or loose foam that will stop the adhesive gripping.
  • Ignoring the corners where bits of foam often hide.

FAQ

How clean does the headlining board need to be?

Clean and smooth to the touch, with no loose foam or dust. The adhesive needs a sound surface to bond to.

Should I sand the board?

It is usually not needed if the foam is properly removed and the surface feels smooth. The aim is a clean, even surface, not a polished one.

With a clean, smooth board in front of you, you are ready for the adhesive.
